Hurricane HU172STM headers (extractors) are designed for selected Mitsubishi Triton ME, MF, MG, MH and MJ models from 1986 to 1996 fitted with the 2.6L 4G54 Astron SOHC 8-valve petrol engine.
Suitable for applicable 2WD and 4WD models, these Australian-made headers use mandrel-bent mild-steel pipework with approximately 41mm (1 5/8") primary pipes, 44mm (1 3/4") secondary pipes and a 51mm (2") outlet to improve exhaust flow, torque, throttle response and engine performance.

Hurricane HU172STM headers (extractors) are designed for selected Mitsubishi Triton ME, MF, MG, MH and MJ models from 1986 to 1996 fitted with the 2.6L 4G54 Astron SOHC 8-valve petrol engine.
Suitable for applicable 2WD and 4WD Triton models, HU172STM replaces the restrictive original exhaust manifold with an Australian-made performance header designed to improve exhaust flow, torque, throttle response and engine performance.
The header configuration uses approximately 41mm (1 5/8") primary pipes, 44mm (1 3/4") secondary pipes and a 51mm (2") outlet.
CUT & WELD INSTALLATION – HU172STM requires fabrication to connect the header outlet to the existing exhaust system.
Please check availability and current lead time before ordering.
Hurricane HU172STM headers are Australian Made using mandrel-bent mild-steel pipework.
The header uses approximately 41mm (1 5/8") primary pipes feeding into 44mm (1 3/4") secondary pipes with a 51mm (2") outlet.
HU172STM requires fabrication of the connection between the header outlet and the vehicle's existing exhaust system. Suitable exhaust pipe and connecting components can be fabricated as required during installation.
Please contact Best Mufflers if you require advice on gaskets, exhaust components or installation requirements for your Triton.
IMPORTANT: HU172STM is for the 2.6L 4G54 Astron petrol engine. Mitsubishi Triton ME-MJ models were also produced with diesel and V6 petrol engines, so confirm the engine before ordering.
Hurricane headers use non-protruding secondary pipes in the collector, allowing the pipes to transition over the collector cone rather than extending unnecessarily into the exhaust gas path. This provides a smoother transition through the collector and helps reduce unwanted exhaust restriction.
Selected Hurricane header designs also use merge-style collector features to assist exhaust gas transition and scavenging through the collector outlet.
4G54 Engine: HU172STM suits the 2.6L 4G54 Astron SOHC 8-valve petrol engine. Australian application data confirms the 2555cc 4G54 throughout the ME-MJ Triton range.
2WD & 4WD: Australian application data confirms the 4G54 engine in both rear-wheel-drive (2WD) and 4WD Triton models during this period.
Year Range: Australian application catalogues list the 2.6L 4G54 Triton from approximately October 1986 through October 1996. Individual ME, MF, MG, MH and MJ series dates overlap in some application catalogues.
Engine Identification: The 4G54 used in this application is a 2555cc SOHC 8-valve naturally aspirated carburettor petrol engine.
Other Engines: Do not confuse this application with the 2.5L 4D56 diesel or later 3.0L 6G72 V6 petrol Triton. HU172STM is specifically listed here for the 2.6L 4G54.
Because these vehicles are now approximately 30-40 years old, check for engine conversions, previous exhaust modifications and altered mounting arrangements before installation.
HU172STM is a cut-and-weld installation. The header outlet must be connected to the vehicle's existing exhaust system by an experienced exhaust fitter. Welding and fabrication of the connecting pipe will be required.
Lubricate the original manifold studs and nuts with a suitable penetrating lubricant before removal. Older exhaust fasteners can become difficult to remove after many years of corrosion and repeated heat cycles.
Professional installation by an experienced exhaust workshop is recommended.
Gaskets, exhaust connecting pipe, fasteners and other installation components should not be assumed to be included unless specifically confirmed before ordering.
A new cylinder-head exhaust manifold gasket is recommended when installing the headers.
Because HU172STM uses a cut-and-weld exhaust connection, additional 51mm (2") exhaust pipe and connecting components may be required depending on the existing exhaust system.
Inspect the original manifold studs and nuts before installation and replace damaged or heavily corroded components where required.
At 4,000 rpm, the 2.6L 4G54 four-cylinder engine theoretically draws approximately 5,200 litres of intake air per minute at 100% volumetric efficiency and expels around 15,600 litres of hot exhaust gas per minute at approximately 600°C.
A well-designed header and exhaust system helps manage this high gas flow efficiently, reducing restriction and improving exhaust scavenging, torque, throttle response and engine performance.
Before installation, confirm that the vehicle is fitted with the 2.6L 4G54 Astron SOHC 8-valve petrol engine.
Lubricate threaded fasteners with WD-40 or a similar penetrating lubricant before removal to assist with easier removal and installation.
Trial-fit the header before completing the downstream exhaust connection. The outlet must be connected to the existing exhaust by an experienced exhaust fitter.
After installation and several heat cycles, inspect the exhaust system for leaks and recheck accessible fasteners where appropriate.
Hurricane headers are covered against manufacturing defects subject to supplier warranty terms and conditions.
Any emissions-control equipment required for the particular vehicle must remain correctly installed and operational.
Installation must comply with applicable Australian state or territory requirements relating to emissions, exhaust noise and vehicle modifications.
What Mitsubishi Triton models do HU172STM headers suit?
HU172STM is designed for selected Mitsubishi Triton ME, MF, MG, MH and MJ models from approximately 1986-1996 fitted with the 2.6L 4G54 Astron petrol engine.
Does HU172STM fit both 2WD and 4WD Tritons?
Yes. This application covers applicable 2WD and 4WD models fitted with the 2.6L 4G54 engine.
Is the Mitsubishi 4G54 the 2.6L Astron engine?
