Engine Airflow Data

The 1.6L HDE engine moves a surprising amount of air. At approximately 4000 rpm and 85% volumetric efficiency, the engine draws around 2,720 litres of intake air per minute. Once combustion occurs and exhaust gas temperatures rise to approximately 600°C, exhaust volume expands significantly to approximately 8,160 litres per minute.

This increased exhaust volume highlights why efficient header design is important. Correct primary and secondary pipe sizing helps maintain exhaust gas velocity, improve cylinder scavenging and reduce pumping losses, resulting in stronger torque, improved throttle response and more efficient engine operation.
